Fitted to the 991-generation 911 Turbo (2012 onward), it marked Porsche's move away from the legendary race-derived Mezger engine to a newer direct-injection flat-six architecture optimized for everyday drivability and durability.

The 991 Turbo was the first 911 Turbo to abandon the hallowed Mezger engine, whose roots traced back to Porsche's Le Mans-winning 962 race car.
Porsche's later 992-generation Turbo actually shrank the displacement to 3.7 liters while making more power, underscoring how much was left on the table in the 3.8.
