The engine

Twin-Turbo V8

A flat-plane 90-degree twin-turbo V8 that spins up with a hard, metallic shriek and delivers ferocious, lag-light response; for the 750S McLaren even re-tuned the exhaust harmonics to sharpen the top-end note.

Designed by McLaren with Ricardo and assembled at Ricardo's Shoreham-by-Sea facility, its architecture traces back to a Nissan VRH racing engine whose VRH35 descendant powered the R390 GT1 at Le Mans.

McLaren bought the intellectual property to a TWR-developed engine originally rooted in a Nissan IndyCar design that never actually raced.
The flat-plane crank is what gives it that razor-sharp, almost two-stroke-like wail instead of a muscle-car burble.
One basic architecture has served the 720S, Senna, Elva, GT, 750S and 765LT.
