Designed as a V8 replacement that gives nothing away, it serves up around 416 hp and a thick wave of torque with effortless, almost silken delivery befitting a flagship Lexus. The twin turbos build boost early for muscular low-end response rather than peaky theatrics.

Coded V35A-FTS, it debuted in 2017 in the fifth-generation Lexus LS 500 and is part of Toyota's Dynamic Force engine family, engineered and built in Japan. It famously replaced the brand's long-running V8 in several flagship models.

• It is the first turbocharged V-engine in Toyota's history, ending the company's traditional reliance on naturally aspirated V8s at the top of the range.
• The intake camshafts use an electric-motor-driven variable valve timing system (VVT-iE) while the exhaust side uses conventional hydraulic VVT-i.
• The same engine is shared across Toyota and Lexus trucks and SUVs, including the LX 600 and Land Cruiser, not just luxury sedans.
