5.7L V8 Mild Hybrid

A deep-chested, torque-laden American V8 with the classic HEMI rumble, now smoothed by a 48-volt belt motor that fills in low-end response and eases stop-start transitions.

The third-generation 5.7L HEMI debuted in 2003 in the Ram 1500, reviving Chrysler's legendary hemispherical-head V8 lineage; the eTorque mild-hybrid system arrived with the 2019 Ram 1500.

• 'HEMI' is short for hemispherical combustion chamber, a design Chrysler first traces to a WWII-era aircraft engine and its 1951 'FirePower' V8 — the early engines weren't even badged Hemi.
• The eTorque system swaps the conventional alternator for a 48-volt motor-generator fed by a small lithium-ion pack, adding instant low-rpm torque assist.
• The original race-bred 426 'Elephant' Hemi was retired in 1971 before the nameplate was reborn for the modern era in 2003.
