Twin-Turbo V8 PHEV

The hot-vee twin-turbo S68 V8 pairs with a gearbox-integrated electric motor in the M5 and XM, delivering ferocious, near-1,000 Nm hybrid torque with the deep, layered snarl of M's flagship eight.

Successor to BMW M's long-running S63 V8, the S68 is produced at BMW's Hams Hall plant in the English Midlands and made its M debut in the BMW XM before powering the G90 M5.

• The G90 M5 is the first BMW M sedan ever to be a plug-in hybrid, a move M leadership said was the only way to keep the V8 alive under tightening emissions rules.
• The turbochargers nestle inside the V of the engine block ('hot-vee'), shortening the path to the exhaust for sharper throttle response.
• The S68 also serves duty far beyond M cars, appearing in Rolls-Royce and BMW's own armored and large-SUV applications.
