Built on Mercedes' modern M254 four-cylinder family, the system mates the engine to an electric motor integrated with the 9G-Tronic automatic and the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive hardware.

• The roughly 23 kWh battery gives the GLC 350e an unusually long electric-only range of around 50 miles, far beyond most plug-in SUVs of its size.
• Uncommonly for a plug-in hybrid, it supports DC fast charging, refilling from 10 to 80 percent in about half an hour.
• Its electric motor alone makes more torque than many small engines, contributing the bulk of the system's low-speed shove.
