In the T8 plug-in hybrid, a single 2.0-liter four is both turbocharged and supercharged, the supercharger erasing low-rpm lag while a rear electric motor adds instant torque and on-demand all-wheel drive.

The engine comes from Volvo's modular Drive-E family, the four-cylinder-only strategy the Geely-owned Swedish maker adopted to replace its older five- and six-cylinder engines across the entire range.

• Volvo built its whole modern lineup around this single 2.0-liter block, scaling it from mild diesels to 400-plus-horsepower hybrids.
• On the T8, the gasoline engine drives the front wheels while a separate electric motor drives the rear, so the car has no mechanical driveshaft linking the two axles.
• Stacking a supercharger and a turbocharger lets the small engine behave like a much larger one without the cruising thirst of a big motor.
