The engine

M256

Turbocharged 3.0L Inline-Six Mild Hybrid

A smooth, characterful straight-six with the inherent balance the layout is famous for, boosted by a 48-volt system that erases turbo lag for an immediate, seamless surge of power.

The M256 was introduced in 2017 as Mercedes' modern inline-six, reviving the configuration the brand had abandoned for V6s, and AMG comprehensively upgraded it for the 53-series models.

It carries a belt-free 48-volt electric auxiliary compressor that spins up to 70,000 rpm in about 0.3 seconds to provide boost before the exhaust turbo wakes up.
A starter-generator sandwiched between engine and transmission replaces the alternator, belt drive and conventional starter, freeing space and adding instant electric assist.
Mercedes revived the inline-six in part because its slim, modular packaging shares components and tooling with the brand's four-cylinder engines.
