The engine

Gamma

1.6L Turbocharged I4

A willing, free-revving small-displacement turbo that builds boost early and pulls cleanly through the mid-range, giving compact crossovers and hot hatches a surprisingly eager character.

Part of Hyundai-Kia's Gamma engine family, introduced in 2006 as an all-aluminum successor to the older Alpha unit; the turbocharged T-GDI version (codenamed G4FJ) arrived in 2011.

The Gamma family switched to a timing chain instead of a belt and shed about 15 kg versus its predecessor through aluminum block and head construction.
The turbo version uses a twin-scroll turbocharger to cut lag, and the same basic engine has powered everything from the Veloster and Kona to the i30 and Ceed.
