The engine

W16

8.0L Quad-Turbo W16

An almost surreal powerplant that delivers relentless, seamless thrust with four turbos spooling in unison, hauling Bugatti's hyper-GTs past 250 mph with uncanny calm.

Conceived for Volkswagen Group by Ferdinand Piëch, the W16 is essentially two narrow-angle VR8s on a common crank; it powered the Veyron and Chiron and was built in Molsheim, France.

The idea was famously sketched on the back of an envelope by Piëch in 1997 before becoming reality.
It is the only 16-cylinder engine ever used in a production car, and the Chiron's version uses 32 fuel injectors via a duplex injection system.
After nearly 20 years it was retired in 2024 with the Chiron Super Sport L'Ultime as the final car to carry it.
