A 48-volt mild-hybrid four-cylinder that can shut down two cylinders when cruising and coast with the engine off entirely, chasing economy without the cost of a full hybrid.

VW’s workhorse EA211 evo family, updated for the MQB evo platform and shared across Golf, Tiguan and T-Roc.

Cylinder deactivation shuts down two of the four cylinders under light load.
The 48-volt system lets the engine switch off completely while coasting.
A full hybrid version joins the range later — a first for Volkswagen.
