In the RAV4 Prime this Atkinson-cycle four feels almost reluctant alone, but paired with motors on each axle it shoves the SUV forward with quiet, instant, electric-led urgency that makes it the quickest thing Toyota sells short of a sports car.

It belongs to Toyota's Dynamic Force / TNGA engine family introduced in 2017; the A25A-FXS is the hybrid-tuned version of Toyota's 2.5-liter four, engineered around efficiency rather than peak output.

• Its 41 percent thermal efficiency was among the highest of any production gasoline engine when it launched, helped by an unusually high 14:1 compression ratio.
• The RAV4 Prime uses a separate electric motor on each axle to create electronic all-wheel drive with no mechanical driveshaft linking front to rear.
• To chase efficiency it deliberately bleeds some intake charge back into the manifold via late intake-valve closing, sacrificing standalone power for economy.
