The verdict

What's good

  • Plug-in lets you drive electric daily
  • Push-to-pass button for quick bursts
  • Sporty feel rare in this class
  • Striking, aggressive Dodge styling

What's not

  • Brand's newer models unproven long-term
  • Heavy for a small SUV
  • Thick pillars hurt rear visibility
  • Pricey next to similar compact SUVs

The engine

1.3L I4 Turbo PHEV

1.3L Turbo I4 Plug-in Hybrid

A small turbo four paired with an electric motor that gives the Hornet R/T surprisingly strong, torque-rich step-off, with the e-motor covering low-speed urge before the turbo spools. Punchy in a straight line thanks to combined output well above what the displacement suggests.

Built on the Stellantis Small Wide 4x4 platform and assembled in Pomigliano d'Arco, Italy, alongside its mechanical twin, the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The Hornet is effectively a restyled, North-America-only Dodge interpretation of that Italian-built PHEV.
