A small, eager turbo four that swaps the old 1.4 MultiAir's lag for early, friendly mid-range pull, staying noticeably quieter than the diesels it replaced. It is tuned more for relaxed everyday urge than outright drama.

Part of the FCA 'Global Small Engine' family marketed as FireFly, launched in 2016 with a modular block shared between three- and four-cylinder versions on the same line. The 1.3 Turbo debuted in the facelifted 2019 Fiat 500X for Europe and North America.

• It uses Fiat's third-generation MultiAir hydraulic valve control, which can delay intake-valve closing to cut effective compression and suppress knock under high load.
• The three- and four-cylinder FireFly variants are deliberately designed to share components so they can be built on one production line.
• Fiat quoted the FireFly Turbo as up to roughly 20% more efficient than its older petrol engines and up to 20% quieter than the equivalent turbodiesel.
