Twin motors give instant, surefooted all-wheel-drive shove, with BMW tuning the delivery to feel linear and refined rather than neck-snapping in the iX.

Part of BMW's fifth-generation eDrive system developed in-house and shared across the i4, i5, i7 and iX, built on decades of electrification work since the i3.

• The motor is a current-excited synchronous design: the rotor's magnetism comes from electrified coils, so it contains no rare-earth permanent magnets at all.
• BMW packaged motor, transmission and power electronics into one housing that is roughly 30 percent more power-dense than the prior generation.
• Avoiding rare-earth magnets also frees BMW from supply chains dominated by a handful of countries.
