2.4L Flat-4 (Boxer)

A naturally aspirated boxer four that revs willingly to 7,000 rpm with a flat, characterful thrum, chosen specifically to keep weight low and the center of gravity down for pure handling balance.

The FA24D is a Subaru-built horizontally opposed engine, co-developed with Toyota under project leader Tetsuya Tada; it replaced the smaller 2.0-liter FA20 in the second-generation GR86 and BRZ for 2022.

• Toyota and Subaru deliberately chose natural aspiration over a turbo, because mounting Subaru's turbo would have raised both the price and the car's center of gravity, working against the 'ultimate pure sports car' goal.
• It uses Toyota's D-4S system that blends direct and port injection, and gained stronger pistons and reworked con rods over the old FA20 to handle more torque.
• The bigger displacement erased the old FA20's notorious mid-range torque 'dip' between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm.
