The horizontally-opposed 'boxer' six has defined the 911 since 1963; this 992-generation 3.0 twin-turbo traces a direct mechanical lineage back through every air- and water-cooled 911 before it.

The flat-six sits behind the rear wheels — a layout everyone said shouldn't work, yet it's defined the 911's character for 60 years.
'Boxer' comes from the pistons punching outward in opposed pairs, like two boxers trading blows.
