The FA24 boxer (FA24DIT) pairs a twin-scroll turbo with a wide, flexible mid-range and Subaru's signature off-beat horizontally-opposed rumble, trading peak-rev drama for usable everyday muscle.

Built around Subaru's decades-long commitment to the horizontally-opposed layout it has used since the 1960s for its low center of gravity, the FA24 is a direct-injection evolution that bored out the previous 2.0-liter FA20.

Subaru is the only mainstream automaker still putting a turbocharged flat-four into regular production cars.
The flat-four bloodline traces to the rally-conquering EJ engines that carried Colin McRae and Prodrive to World Rally Championship glory.
The boxer's pistons punch outward in opposing pairs, naturally canceling much of the vibration a conventional inline-four produces.
