The engine

Boxer

2.4L Turbo Flat-4

A turbocharged, direct-injected horizontally-opposed four with a famously strong, flat mid-range and the low, off-beat thrum that has defined Subaru's signature boxer character for decades.

The FA24 (FA24DIT) boxer, debuting in the 2019 Ascent before powering the WRX, Outback XT and Legacy, built with an all-aluminum block and head and timing-chain valvetrain.

Subaru is the only automaker still building a turbocharged flat-four in America.
Its torque peaks from around 2,000 rpm, letting it run on regular 87-octane fuel while matching a naturally-aspirated six's output.
It switched from the previous boxer's timing belt to a timing chain, reducing scheduled maintenance.
