Subaru's flat-four 'boxer' runs an efficiency-minded Atkinson cycle and teams with electric motors for quiet, seamless full-hybrid running while keeping the low center of gravity and symmetrical all-wheel drive feel Subaru fans expect.

This 'Strong Hybrid' (S:HEV) marries Subaru's signature horizontally opposed 2.5-liter engine to Toyota-sourced hybrid hardware, the fruit of the two companies' long-running technical alliance.

The two motor-generator units and the power-split approach are sourced from Toyota's hybrid system, the same lineage as the Highlander Hybrid.
Subaru repackaged that hybrid transaxle inside a CVT-style case to preserve its mechanical symmetrical all-wheel drive.
Despite borrowing Toyota guts, it keeps the genuine flat-four boxer layout rather than switching to an inline engine.
