Two permanent magnet motors, one per axle, deliver the same quiet shove as the coupe with none of the drama, and the front unit can disconnect itself so the car runs as a rear driver when the grip is not needed. The rear motor only version is the range champion of the pair and gives up surprisingly little in feel.

This is the long roof body of the Polestar 4, built on Geely's SEA electric platform at Busan in South Korea rather than in China, and launched to restore the conventional rear window that the original notoriously deleted in favour of a camera.

• The original Polestar 4 replaced its rear window with a roof mounted camera feeding the mirror; this body puts the glass back and keeps the camera feed.
• The rear drive version is both the cheapest and the longest legged, a pattern that holds across almost every twin motor electric car.
• Korean assembly rather than Chinese was chosen partly to sidestep import tariffs, though it did not save the car's United States prospects.
• Polestar began as Volvo's racing and tuning partner before being relaunched in 2017 as a standalone electric performance brand.
