What's good

A third row in an electric car this size is still close to unique
Range is long enough that the seven-seat school run and the family holiday are the same car
Charging is quick enough to make a stop feel like a coffee rather than a delay
Rear-wheel drive gives it a tidiness the boxy shape does not lead you to expect

It costs considerably more than the combustion GLB it sits beside

The engine

Single-Motor Electric (RWD)

One motor on the rear axle, geared for reach rather than drama, in a body shape that has no business travelling as far as it does. The delivery is deliberately soft off the line so that a full car with seven people aboard never feels like it is being wrestled.

The GLB is the first Mercedes SUV built on the 800-volt compact architecture the brand introduced with the CLA, and it takes over from the EQB rather than sitting beside it. Production is at Rastatt, the plant that has built compact Mercedes since the original A-Class.

The 800-volt architecture lets it take on enough charge in ten minutes for most of a day's driving.
It is one of very few electric cars anywhere that offers a third row at this size.
A heat pump is standard rather than optional, which is a large part of why the winter range holds up.
The electric version arrived first and the combustion versions followed, reversing the usual order for a Mercedes SUV.
