A single rear-axle motor tuned almost entirely for reach, which is why the smallest Mercedes SUV now travels further on a charge than most cars two classes above it. Response is smooth and unhurried rather than sharp, in keeping with a car sold on range and refinement.

The GLA moves to the 800-volt compact architecture Mercedes introduced with the CLA and retires the EQA in the process, so the nameplate absorbs the electric model rather than running alongside it. Built at Rastatt, home of Mercedes compact cars since the first A-Class.

It is the longest-legged compact electric SUV Mercedes has built, by a wide margin over the EQA it replaces.
The 800-volt system takes charge fast enough to add most of a day's range in a coffee stop.
Combustion versions were announced for later, so the electric car led the launch rather than following it.
The EQA badge is retired with this car: Mercedes folded the electric model back under the GLA name.
