An evolution of Hyundai's Gamma engine family introduced in 2006; the turbocharged Gamma II T-GDI arrived around 2013-2014 and matured under the 'Smartstream' branding Hyundai adopted in 2018.

• The Smartstream G1.6 T-GDI was the world's first production engine to use Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD), which varies how long the intake valves stay open independently of timing and lift.
• Hyundai credited CVVD with roughly a 4% performance gain, 5% better efficiency, and a 12% drop in emissions.
• The same 1.6 turbo architecture underpins both conventional and hybrid versions across the Hyundai-Kia group, from the Tucson to the Santa Fe and Sorento.
