The EA888 is the everyman performance turbo-four: tractable and quiet in a family Atlas, yet eager and boost-happy in GTI and Golf R trim where it pulls hard with a crisp, muscular mid-range.

Launched in 2008 as part of Volkswagen Group's EA888 family to replace the older EA113 engines, it has been continuously evolved across four generations and is shared widely with Audi.

The same basic engine spans from a sensible SUV to the 300-plus-horsepower Golf R and Audi S3, a remarkable spread for one block.
Volkswagen's latest 'evo4' revision was engineered to sharpen the EA888 as a performance spearpoint for the hottest GTI Clubsport.
Despite the marketing split, the 'TSI' badge in VWs and 'TFSI' badge in Audis refer to the same fundamental EA888 design.
