2.8L Turbodiesel I4

A torquey common-rail four with a variable-nozzle turbo, it pulls hard and low — built for hauling and durability rather than drama, with a deep workhorse diesel thrum.

Part of Toyota's GD diesel family launched in 2015 to replace the long-serving KD engines, it powers the global Hilux, Fortuner, Prado and HiAce and is produced in Japan, India and Thailand.

Versus the 3.0L 1KD it replaced, the smaller 2.8 actually makes about 25% more torque while improving fuel economy by roughly 15%.
It is built in three countries, including Toyota Industries' plant in Bangalore, India and Siam Toyota Manufacturing in Thailand.
