Dual-Motor Electric

In all-wheel-drive trim a rear permanent-magnet motor does the heavy lifting while a front asynchronous motor adds grip on demand, giving instant, near-silent torque and a rear-biased, planted feel uncommon in a van or family crossover.

Built on Volkswagen's MEB modular electric platform, the rear unit is the new APP550 drive developed in-house by VW Group and shared across Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda EVs.

• The APP550's stator uses hairpin windings to pack more copper into the same space, improving power density and heat management.
• In the ID.Buzz AWD setup, the front motor is an asynchronous design that can be effectively decoupled when not needed, reducing drag for efficiency.
• The single rear APP550 produces up to 286 PS and 550 Nm, the torque figure that gives the motor its name.
