1.4L Turbo I4 Mild Hybrid

Suzuki's hottest small-car engine: an eager, free-revving turbo four that, in 48-volt mild-hybrid Swift Sport form, uses an integrated starter-generator to 'torque-fill' and mask turbo lag for crisp throttle response. It is light, willing and tuned for fizz rather than brute force.

The Boosterjet family is Suzuki's downsized-turbo answer for Europe; the K14D mild-hybrid revision added dual variable valve timing and a smaller turbo to meet Euro 6d while keeping the Swift Sport's famously light, chuckable character intact.

• The 48-volt belt-driven integrated starter-generator both harvests energy under braking and adds assist torque during acceleration to fill in for the turbo before it spools.
• The mild-hybrid Swift Sport actually has a slightly smaller turbo and lower peak power than the earlier non-hybrid car, trading outright punch for emissions compliance and broader torque.
