A characterful, thrummy three-cylinder turbo that punches above its tiny displacement, serving up its torque from low revs for an eager, flexible feel with the signature off-beat triple warble.

Suzuki's K10C from the Boosterjet family of downsized direct-injection turbo engines, here paired with a 48V SHVS mild-hybrid assist and produced by Maruti Suzuki in India for models like the Fronx.

• The single turbo and direct injection let this 1.0-litre triple match the output of much larger naturally aspirated fours while sipping fuel.
• Boosterjet engines were engineered to deliver their peak torque across a wide, flat plateau from around 2,000 rpm, masking the usual small-turbo lag.
• Three-cylinder layout inherently saves weight and internal friction versus a four, aiding both economy and throttle response.
