The verdict

What's good

  • 4x4 AWD PHEV combo is genuinely rare at this price point
  • Sport coupe roofline gives it a premium presence above the segment
  • OpenR Link infotainment with Google built-in is best-in-class for Renault
  • Electric-only commutes achievable most weekdays on a single charge

What's not

  • PHEV battery weight dulls ride quality over broken surfaces
  • Coupe roofline meaningfully cuts rear headroom for tall passengers
  • Service network for this new model is still building out
  • Insurance costs land in a significantly higher bracket than rivals

The engine

E-Tech

1.8L I4 Plug-In Hybrid 4x4

The Rafale's flagship powertrain stacks three electric machines onto its petrol engine for a combined 300 hp and a permanent, electrically-driven four-wheel-drive that fires it to 100 km/h in around 6.4 seconds while still managing huge plug-in range.

It builds on Renault's 200 hp E-Tech hybrid by adding a dedicated rear-axle motor, and the sportiest 'atelier Alpine' version gets chassis tuning developed with Renault's Alpine performance arm.
