1.6L I4 Plug-In Hybrid

The Captur E-Tech always sets off in silent electric mode and shuffles between its petrol four and two electric motors so seamlessly that gearchanges become almost imperceptible, trading outright punch for refined, fuel-sipping town manners.

This was Renault's first-ever plug-in hybrid, and its defining party trick, a clutchless multi-mode 'dog' gearbox, was lifted straight from the thinking Renault's Formula 1 team used in its power units.

The E-Tech system was protected by around 150 patents, roughly a third of which cover the unusual clutchless dog-box alone.
There is no conventional clutch or synchromesh; the smaller electric motor spins the gears up to matching speed before each shift.
Renault claims owners can run on electric power alone for the majority of low-speed urban driving.
