The Austral's three-cylinder full hybrid juggles its petrol triple and two electric motors across a remarkable number of drive combinations, delivering brisk, mostly-electric low-speed running with a characterful triple thrum when the engine joins in.

Part of Renault's E-Tech family, it pairs a new HR12-series 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder with the brand's signature F1-inspired clutchless multi-mode gearbox, built in Europe.

• The gearbox mixes a four-speed path for the engine with a two-speed path for the motor, yielding up to 15 different drive permutations.
• It launches and idles in pure-electric mode, so the engine never has to lug the car away from rest.
• The system has no clutch and no synchromesh, with an electric motor rev-matching every shift.
