A clever turbo four that morphs its own character, shifting toward high compression for efficiency when cruising and low compression for boosted power when pushed.

Nissan's KR-series VC-Turbo, the world's first mass-produced variable-compression engine, here replacing the Murano's long-serving V6.

A multi-link mechanism continuously varies the pistons' top and bottom dead-center positions to change compression on the fly, roughly between 8:1 and 14:1.
Nissan was the first automaker in the world to put a variable-compression engine into mass production.
In the Murano it ousted a naturally aspirated V6, trading two cylinders for more torque and better economy.
