The Xpander's 4A91 is an unstressed, naturally aspirated four that prizes durability and easy maintenance over outright urgency, delivering modest but dependable power well suited to family-MPV duty in hot, demanding markets.

From Mitsubishi's long-running 4A9 engine family that debuted in the Colt, the 1.5-litre 4A91 uses Mitsubishi's MIVEC variable valve timing and was produced from 2009 to 2023.

The same 4A9 family was co-developed and shared with Mercedes-Benz and Smart, appearing in the A150 and the Fortwo 1.0.
MIVEC stands for Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control, the brand's variable valve-timing technology.
The 4A91 also served in the ASX, Lancer and Outlander Sport, making it one of Mitsubishi's most widely deployed small engines.
