A quiet, EV-first powertrain that prioritizes silken electric torque off the line, with the Atkinson-cycle four spinning up almost imperceptibly to act as a generator before it ever drives the wheels directly. Power delivery feels like an EV most of the time, the gasoline engine fading in only under hard acceleration or low charge.

Mitsubishi pioneered the mass-market plug-in SUV concept, launching the Outlander PHEV in 2013, and its twin-motor S-AWC all-wheel-drive logic is a direct descendant of the Lancer Evolution and Pajero rally heritage that defined the brand in the Dakar and WRC eras.

• Unlike most hybrids it uses no conventional transmission, instead switching between series (engine-as-generator), parallel, and pure-EV modes via clutch logic.
• It carries separate front and rear electric motors with no mechanical link between the axles, so the 'all-wheel drive' is achieved electronically rather than through a driveshaft.
• The S-AWC torque-vectoring brain is adapted from Mitsubishi's rally-proven Active Yaw Control system.
