A modern downsized turbo four that builds usable torque from as low as 1,800 rpm, giving the Eclipse Cross flexible, low-rev urge rather than a peaky top-end rush. It is smooth and efficient rather than fiery, tuned for everyday tractability.

The 4B40 is one of Mitsubishi's newest clean-sheet in-house engine designs, carrying the brand's MIVEC variable-valve-timing badge that traces back to the Lancer Evolution era.

• It uses both direct and port fuel injection together, a dual-injection setup chosen specifically to wash away the carbon build-up that plagues direct-injection-only engines.
• The turbocharger housing is integrated with the exhaust manifold as a single unit and uses an electronic wastegate for precise boost control.
• The Eclipse Cross was the only vehicle ever to bring the 4B40 to American showrooms.
