Mazda pairs its 2.5-liter four with a single electric motor for smooth, linear shove around town on battery alone, then lets the engine chime in for a refined, low-stress cruise rather than chasing outright drama.

Built on Mazda's e-Skyactiv PHEV system, the unit debuted in the CX-90 as Mazda's first plug-in hybrid, slotted alongside the brand's inline-six in the same longitudinal, rear-biased platform.

Unusually for a hybrid, it drives through a conventional 8-speed automatic with a manual-shift mode rather than a CVT or e-CVT.
The combustion engine can act as a generator, running purely to recharge the pack when the battery is depleted so the EV motor can keep working.
Mazda recommends premium fuel to unlock the full 323 hp figure.
