The engine

2.5L I4 Hybrid

A smooth, frugal hybrid four tuned for efficiency rather than drama, delivering a combined 219 hp and roughly 38 mpg with seamless electric assist and standard electric all-wheel drive. It prioritizes calm, effortless progress.

This is the Toyota Hybrid System, supplied to Mazda through its partnership and alliance with Toyota; it is the same architecture used in the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, adapted to Mazda's CX-50.

The system uses three electric motors (two front, one rear) and a small 1.59-kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery, with the rear motor providing on-demand AWD rather than a driveshaft.
It pairs the engine with a planetary 'e-CVT' and runs on regular 87-octane fuel, a rare hybrid concession for a Mazda built alongside Toyota tech at the shared Huntsville, Alabama era of cooperation.
