A ferocious, high-revving twin-turbo V6 with a hard metallic edge to its voice, delivering its power with a knife-edge urgency that feels closer to a racing engine than a road one.

Designed and built entirely in-house by Maserati at its Modena plant from 2020, the Nettuno marked Maserati's return to its own bespoke engines after years of Ferrari-sourced units; it debuted in the MC20 supercar.

• Its headline trick is Formula 1-derived pre-chamber 'turbulent jet ignition,' which fires combustion in a small pre-chamber to ignite the main chamber far faster and more completely.
• Each cylinder has two spark plugs: one in the pre-chamber and a second in the main chamber that steps in at light load when the jet ignition needs help.
• At low loads it can shut down an entire bank of three cylinders, even stopping their intake and exhaust cycles to cut pumping losses.
