An Atkinson-cycle four paired with electric motors and an 18.1 kWh battery, prioritizing smooth, torque-rich electric running and a roughly 37-mile EV range over outright drama, with strong combined output for brisk acceleration.

Built around Toyota's A25A-FXS from the Dynamic Force engine family introduced in 2017, the same core unit used across Camry, RAV4, and Lexus NX/RX hybrids; the PHEV powertrain is shared with the Toyota RAV4 Prime.

The A25A-FXS runs a very high 14:1 compression ratio and posts thermal efficiency around 41 percent, among the best of any production engine.
Despite being a luxury crossover, the NX 450h+ uses an Atkinson-cycle combustion strategy borrowed from economy hybrids to maximize efficiency.
The combined hybrid system makes about 304 hp, enough for a roughly 6.0-second 0-60 mph run.
