The engine

1.3L I4 Turbo PHEV

1.3L Turbo I4 Plug-in Hybrid

The turbo four drives the front wheels while a rear-axle electric motor fills in instantly, combining for around 280 hp and a Q4 all-wheel-drive setup that can also slink along in near-silent electric mode.

The 1.3-liter unit is a member of the Fiat/Stellantis 'FireFly' GSE engine family, assembled at the Termoli plant in southern Italy, paired here with a rear e-motor in Alfa's first-ever electrified car.

The Tonale PHEV is the very first electrified vehicle in Alfa Romeo's history.
Its all-wheel drive is purely electric at the back: there is no driveshaft, the rear axle is turned only by its own motor.
The gasoline engine uses Fiat's MultiAir electro-hydraulic valve system, which varies valve lift without a conventional throttle plate.
