Smartstream

1.6L GDI Hybrid

An efficiency-first Atkinson-cycle four that, unusually for a hybrid, drives through a crisp six-speed dual-clutch gearbox rather than a CVT for a more engaging feel.

Based on the Hyundai-Kia Kappa 1.6 GDI evolved into the Smartstream G1.6 hybrid unit, shared across the Hyundai Motor Group's hybrid lineup.

It uses an exhaust-gas-integrated cylinder head, casting the exhaust manifold into the head to speed warm-up and cut emissions.
Variable-displacement oil pumps reduce internal friction for better economy.
The six-speed DCT replaces the CVT used by most rival hybrids, giving the Niro a more conventional driving character.
