The naturally aspirated K20 in the Civic is smooth, eager and happy to rev, delivering its power linearly without turbo lag in a way that defines Honda's reputation for sweet four-cylinders.

Part of Honda's celebrated K-series, which debuted in the early 2000s and became a tuner and motorsport legend; the Civic's port-injected variant (K20C2) is built on the same family that spawned the turbocharged Type R engine.

• It uses Honda's i-VTEC, which continuously varies intake cam timing across the whole rev range rather than just switching at high rpm.
• The base Civic's unit shares its K20C engine family and 86mm bore with the Civic Type R's turbo motor, but stays naturally aspirated and port-injected.
• It is among the last port-injection-only engines Honda will build before moving on.
