Honda's e:HEV two-motor system pairs a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle engine with a traction motor and a generator motor, developed by Honda as its distinctive answer to hybrid drive rather than a conventional parallel setup.

At low and mid speeds the gas engine usually just spins a generator to feed the electric drive motor, so the wheels are turned by electricity even though there's no plug.
Only at steady highway cruising does the engine clutch in to drive the wheels directly, where it is most efficient.
The Atkinson-cycle engine sacrifices some outright power for thermal efficiency, leaning on the electric motor to fill in the low-end.
