An Atkinson-cycle four paired with a strong permanent-magnet electric motor, tuned for quiet, low-emission urban running where the van can cover real distances on battery alone before the petrol engine joins in. The electric side does the heavy lifting around town, the engine adding range and grunt when needed.

Ford's Duratec four here serves in plug-in form for the Transit and Tourneo Custom range; Ford was an early mover in commercial-van PHEVs, having first launched a range-extender Transit Custom PHEV back in 2019.

• The electric motor (111 kW) is actually more powerful than the petrol engine (86 kW), so the van leans on electric drive as its primary character.
• The original 2019-generation Transit Custom PHEV used a tiny 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder purely as a generator, an unusually small range-extender for a vehicle this size, before the later switch to the 2.5-litre Duratec.
