The verdict

What's good

  • V8 soundtrack delivers a visceral experience rare in a three-row family SUV
  • Best-in-class tow rating for a unibody SUV at this price point
  • Full-size cabin with proper third-row space for adult passengers
  • Large fuel tank means fewer highway stops despite the V8's appetite

What's not

  • V8 fuel costs are notably high on long hauls versus V6 alternatives
  • Safety scores lag behind class-leading Korean and Japanese competitors
  • Infotainment system feels dated versus newer tech-forward rivals
  • Firm ride at low speeds makes urban commuting noticeably bouncy

The engine

HEMI (Eagle)

5.7L HEMI V8

A burbling, deep-chested pushrod V8 with the unmistakable lopey HEMI idle, delivering its punch low and broad rather than at the top of the tach.

This is the third-generation Chrysler HEMI, launched for 2003 and revived to carry the legendary hemispherical-combustion-chamber name first made famous by Chrysler's 1950s and Mopar muscle-car V8s. The 2009-and-later VVT version is internally codenamed 'Eagle.'
