A burbling, deep-chested pushrod V8 with the unmistakable lopey HEMI idle, delivering its punch low and broad rather than at the top of the tach.

This is the third-generation Chrysler HEMI, launched for 2003 and revived to carry the legendary hemispherical-combustion-chamber name first made famous by Chrysler's 1950s and Mopar muscle-car V8s. The 2009-and-later VVT version is internally codenamed 'Eagle.'

• The 'HEMI' name refers to the hemispherical combustion chambers, a design Chrysler championed back in the 1950s and again in the 426 Race HEMI of the muscle-car era.
• Despite its modern fuel injection, it keeps an old-school single-cam pushrod layout instead of overhead cams, helping it stay compact and torquey.
• The 5.7L revived a 16-valve, two-plugs-per-cylinder arrangement, using a second spark plug per cylinder to improve combustion and emissions.
