The C5 Aircross PHEV mates a turbo PureTech four to an electric motor for smooth, torque-rich progress that leans on Citroën's comfort-first character, gliding silently on electric power up to motorway speeds before the petrol engine blends in.

It is a Stellantis powertrain built around the award-winning PureTech turbo four and the group's e-EAT8 automatic, shared across Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel plug-in hybrids.

• The plug-in drive integrates its electric motor inside the e-EAT8 eight-speed automatic rather than using a separate transmission.
• Later versions of the system roughly doubled battery capacity to extend electric range well past 80 km WLTP.
• The PureTech base engine family won International Engine of the Year honours multiple times before being adapted for hybrid duty.
