Power delivery is smooth and immediate, leaning on healthy low-end torque rather than headline horsepower; the rear-drive Seal in particular feels eager and planted off the line.

BYD ('Build Your Dreams') started life in 1995 as a rechargeable-battery maker in Shenzhen, China, before becoming a carmaker, so its powertrains are built around in-house cells rather than bought-in packs.

• The flagship technology is the cobalt-free LFP Blade Battery, whose long flat cells double as structural members in newer cars through BYD's Cell-to-Body integration.
• BYD demonstrated the Blade cell's safety with a nail-penetration test in which it did not catch fire or emit smoke, a benchmark many conventional lithium packs fail.
• Because the chemistry is lithium iron phosphate, the packs use no cobalt at all, sidestepping the most ethically fraught EV raw material.
