This is the most powerful combustion engine Audi Sport has ever put into a production car, delivering a deep, hard-hitting V8 surge and a bassy, theatrical exhaust note that propels a two-and-a-half-ton SUV to 60 mph in well under four seconds.

It is the EA825 4.0 TFSI hot-vee twin-turbo V8 shared across the VW Group's performance flagships, closely related to the engine in the Lamborghini Urus and tuned here to its highest factory output.

• In RS Q8 Performance trim it makes 631 hp, the highest output of any series-production internal-combustion engine in Audi Sport's history.
• The turbochargers sit inside the V of the engine in a hot-vee layout, shortening the gas path for sharper throttle response.
• A 48V mild-hybrid system feeds an active anti-roll system as well as smoothing stop-start, helping the SUV stay flat through corners.
