An all-new member of Nissan's VR engine family, hand-assembled at the Iwaki plant in Japan, drawing on a V6 lineage that landed on Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 14 straight years from 1995 to 2008.

• It was offered in two states of tune from the same hardware: 300 hp standard and 400 hp in the Red Sport 400.
• It uses an optical turbine-speed sensor to monitor each turbocharger spinning up to around 220,000 rpm, allowing tighter boost control.
• A water-cooled intercooler integrated into the intake helps it sustain peak torque from just 1,600 rpm.
